He started playing football as a child at the Santa Chiara e San Francesco parish recreation centre in the neighbouring municipality of Rozzano. In 2001, he joined the youth squad of Cimiano and played there for one season. In 2002, he then joined the young team of Milan and began his career with the club. He has represented Italy at several age levels. He has represented Italy at U19, U20, U21, and the senior level. Also, He won eight caps for Italy U19 between 2010 and 2011, including two appearances and one goal in the 2011 UEFA European U19 Football Championship qualifying round. He then represented Italy U20, winning five caps between 2011 and 2012. He made his debut for Italy U21 on 25 April 2012 in a 4-1 win against Scotland. For the Italy U21 team, he went on to make four further appearances, all in 2012.

Less than four months after making his debut for the U21 side, he received his first call-up to the Italy senior team, when manager Cesare Prandelli chose him to the squad for a friendly match against England to be played on 15 August 2012.
