Horst Heldt, the general manager of the team, took notice of his play at the u-19 level, when he scored 11 goals and generated 11 assists in 15 games for the season. Schalke 04

For the 2012–2013 season, Max was a member of Schalke’s Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League teams. He made his professional debut on February 16, 2013, when he replaced Raffael as a substitute and assisted Michel Bastos on a late goal in a 2-2 tie with Mainz 05. On March 12th, he made his Champions League debut as he took the field in a match against Galatasaray of Turkey. Raul’s 2013–2014 jersey number 7 was given to him, and he started the season by scoring twice while competing for Schalke 04 II, the club’s reserve team, against SSVg Velbert. Later that month, he played for the first squad in a 4-0 league victory over VfL Wolfsburg, replacing Jefferson Farfan in the 73rd minute.

On August 21, he made his first appearance for the team against PAOK in a Champions League play-off game. On September 25, he scored his first goal for Schalke against Darmstadt 98 in a DFB-Pokal game. Later on, on November 30, he extended his contract with Schalke through June 30, 2018, and on January 26, 2014, he scored in the first game following the winter break against Hamburger SV. The sole goal he scored in a Champions League group stage encounter against Maribor, which helped Schalke advance to the round of 16, was his most significant contribution.

However, Schalke ultimately lost to Real Madrid, falling 5-4 over two legs. Max also contributed to the winning tally in the last Europa League group game, a 4-0 victory over Asteras Tripoli. He only scored two goals in all competitions during the 2015–2016 season: one in a league victory over Mainz 05 and the other in a Europa League victory against PAOK.
In the 2017–18 campaign, he participated as a defensive midfielder under the guidance of new manager Domenico Tedesco. He was prevented from training for the balance of the season after publicly criticizing sporting director Christian Heidel in April, allowing him to complete the remaining months of his contract before it expired in June.

Crystal Palace

Max committed to a three-year deal with Crystal Palace on August 2, 2018, but struggled to make the first team during his second year. As a result, he was demoted to the Under-23s in December 2020 after failing to play a single minute of League football during the Eagles’ first half of the 2020–21 season. On January 15, 2021, he later left Crystal Palace with both parties’ accord.

FC Koln

Meyer was reportedly recruited by Bundesliga club 1. FC Koln on January 25, 2021, on a free transfer until the end of the 2020–2021 campaign.

International Career

In addition to being the top scorer and recipient of the best player award at the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, Max Meyer was a member of the Germany under-17 team. In a friendly match against the Netherlands, he scored his first goal for Germany’s under-19 squad in 2012, the same year he earned the Fritz Walter Under-17 Silver Medal. He was also a part of the 30-man provisional roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup for the Germany senior team.

He made his official debut against Poland on May 13, 2014, and on October 31, 2016, in a 2-0 friendly victory over Finland in Monchengladbach, he scored his first goal for Germany. In addition, he was nominated to the team for the 2016 Summer Olympics. On August 11, 2016, he scored a hat-trick in a 10-0 victory over Fiji, albeit he also missed a penalty. In the gold medal match, which was contested on August 21, Max scored the equalizer to force a penalty shootout, which Brazil won 5-4.
