Early Years:

McKayla Maroney was born McKayla Rose Maroney in Aliso Viejo, California, on December 9, 1995. Her mother, Erin, was a high school athlete and figure skater, and her father, Mike (who died in 2019), was a Purdue University football player. McKayla was homeschooled before studying to be a gymnast and grew up in an Irish-Catholic household with younger sister Tarynn and younger brother Kav. At the age of two, Erin enrolled McKayla in a gymnastics class, and at the age of nine, Maroney decided she wanted to participate in the Olympics and started training at Gym-Max, a United States of America Gymnastics National Team training center in Costa Mesa.

Profession:

McKayla finished 27th in the all-around and third in the vault at the Visa Championships in 2009. In 2010, she finished seventh in the CoverGirl Classic all-around and third in the Visa Championships all-around, first on vault, seventh on balance beam, and fourth on floor. Maroney won the Pan American Championships in the vault and floor competitions later that year. She started her senior career in 2011, winning the City of Jesolo Trophy’s all-around competition in March. McKayla also ranked fifth on floor and sixth on balance beam at the CoverGirl Classic that year, and second in the all-around, first on vault, seventh on balance beam, and fifth on floor at the Visa Championships. At the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, the American team took first place, with Maroney taking first place on vault. She won the vault competition at the Secret U.S. Classic in 2012 and sustained a nasal fracture and concussion while warming up at the Visa Championships the following year. She went on to participate in the Olympic Trials, where she finished seventh in the all-around, first on vault, and fifth on floor, securing a spot on the team that would compete in the Summer Olympics. McKayla and her teammates were featured on the cover of “Sports Illustrated” in July 2012.

Maroney realized her dream and participated in the Summer Olympics in London in late July 2012. Her vault score in the team vault was the best of the season, and she helped Team USA win the all-around gold. McKayla was supposed to win a gold medal in the vault final, but she fell on her second vault and had to settle for a silver. She fractured her left tibia at a Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions event in September 2012, necessitating the insertion of two screws in the tibia as well as the wearing of a temporary immobilizer. In early October, Maroney returned to the tour, but with leg and foot splints. She was a judge for the Miss America pageant in 2013 and signed a sponsorship agreement with Adidas Gymnastics.

McKayla placed first on vault and third on floor at the Secret U.S. Classic in July 2013, and then won gold medals in vault and floor at the P&G Championships the following month. She competed in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships later that year, finishing sixth overall and winning a gold medal in vault. McKayla has shifted her attention to acting and music since her retirement.

Private Life:

A picture of McKayla wearing a “not impressed” expression became a common internet meme in 2012, and a photo of Maroney and President Obama making the same expression together went viral in November of that year. McKayla received a silver medal in the 2012 Olympics in London, and she has said that recreating the moment with Obama was the coolest moment of her life. After a hacker obtained access to hundreds of celebrity images on iCloud in 2014, nude photos taken while Maroney was underage were released. The pictures were taken down after McKayla filed a lawsuit.

Maroney came forward in late 2017 to say that former team doctor Larry Nassar had sexually abused her since she was 13 years old. After threatening to sue Michigan State University, the US Olympic Committee, and USA Gymnastics, she was paid $1.25 million to sign a confidentiality agreement. When other allegations against Nassar became public, USA Gymnastics eventually waived the confidentiality agreement. The Arthur Ashe Courage Award was given to McKayla and the other survivors of Nassar’s sexual assault in 2018. Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison and 175 years in state prison in Michigan, with an additional 40 to 125 years in early 2018.
