Early Years, Family and Education

On January 13, 1998, Michael Henry Niese was born in St. Louis, Missouri. With his parents, John and Shelia, two brothers, and a sister, he was raised in a big, loving family.

He began playing football in elementary school after developing an early love for the game. He looked up to Chris Long, a fellow St. Louis native and former defensive end for the St. Louis Rams.

Family Background

Niese hails from a football-playing and engineering family. His mother, Shelia, is a civil engineer employed by the city of St. Louis, and his father, John, is a mechanical engineer with Boeing. Also, his sister Mary Beth works as a nurse, while his older brothers David and Daniel are also engineers.

His uncle Mike played in the NFL for the New York Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals, and his grandfather Henry was a football player at Notre Dame.

Niese has passionately and brilliantly pursued both engineering and football, carrying on his family’s love of both sports. He aspires to carry on his family’s legacy since he is proud of it. In addition, he is appreciative of his family’s encouragement and support, viewing them as his greatest supporters and role models.

High School and College Career

Niese excelled as a player on both sides of the ball while attending St. Louis University High School. He was a tight end, defensive end, and offensive lineman who was named All-State and All-Metro as a senior. Along with his academic excellence, he received a National Merit Scholarship and a 4.0 GPA upon graduation.

Despite receiving multiple offers from Division I universities, Niese opted to enroll in the Division I FCS program at the University of Dayton. He believed Dayton offered the ideal mix of academics and athletics for someone who wanted to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

After serving as a redshirt his first year, he went on to start all three seasons as left tackle. He was a formidable presence on the offensive line, helping the Flyers win two conference titles and being named to the All-Pioneer Football League twice.

Niese made the decision to transfer to Temple University for his last year of eligibility after receiving his diploma from Dayton in December 2019. In addition to pursuing a master’s degree in engineering management, he wanted to put himself to the test against more experienced competitors.

Also, in 2020, Michael became a graduate transfer to the Temple Owls, where he started all eight games at right guard. In addition to being selected for the All-American Athletic Conference second team, his tenacity and versatility attracted scouts.

Journey to Pro

Niese did not receive an invitation to the NFL Combine or any significant all-star games, despite having a stellar collegiate career. His pro-day performance was the only thing he could use to demonstrate his abilities and metrics.

At 6 feet 3 inches tall and 303 pounds, he did a 40-yard dash in 5.04 seconds. He also completed 23 repetitions on the bench press and shown strong footwork and agility during exercises.

Michael Niese signed a $795,000 one-year contract with the Detroit Lions, with an average compensation of the same amount per year. Niese’s contract calls for a base salary of $795,000 and a cap hit of the same amount for 2024.

Injuries and Setbacks

Throughout his football career, Niese has experienced his fair share of disappointments and injuries. In his junior year of high school, he sustained an ACL tear that necessitated surgery and a protracted recuperation. In his final year of college, he also struggled with a shoulder issue that restricted his output.

Niese hasn’t allowed these obstacles to stop him from achieving his objectives, though. He has always put a lot of effort into healing from his wounds and honing his abilities and game knowledge.

In addition, he has remained modest and upbeat, winning the respect and affection of his coaches and teammates. He has never taken anything for granted and has always been appreciative of all the opportunities that have come his way.
