Michael’s father was an abusive husband who fled to Australia when Michael was seven years old, and his family relocated to Zimbabwe for the following four years. His mother remarried a concert pianist and the family returned to England, settling in Stockwell, south London.
Career
Tobin dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and began his professional career as an electronic engineer intern at Rockwell. When he became the UK Technical Director for Goupil, a French electric vehicle manufacturer, his career took off. Tobin was elevated to Managing Director when the previous CEO retired when he was only 21 years old. He spent the next ten years or so in France, where he was in charge of the company.
Tobin went on to work at ICG, GlobalServe, Rockwell Corp, Tricord, ICL, Goupil, and Fujitsu, among others. He began his career with Redbus Interhouse as a sales and marketing professional before being named CEO in 2003. He was the driving force behind the merging of competitors Redbus and Telecity, becoming the behemoth TelecityGroup in 2006 and serving as its CEO. He was the first data center operator to earn the Carbon Trust Standard in 2010, and he led the company through many milestones.
After creative differences with other executives, Tobin departed the company in 2014, leading to its insolvency and subsequent acquisition by Equinix in January 2016, but not before receiving the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his “Services to the Digital Economy.” Tobin founded Tobin Ventures Ltd., a technology firm, in 2015.
