In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on January 1, 2021, Eklavya Singh Gaur, the son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur, ended his stand-up performance after accusing him of making hurtful jokes against Hindu deities and India’s Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah.

He was arrested on January 2 by Madhya Pradesh Police in the midst of his comedy routine, claiming India’s laws against hate speech as the justification. Munawar was detained even though the police had no evidence to use against him. But following his arrest, the Supreme Court of India gave him bail, and he came under fire for not honoring a comedian’s right to free expression.
