On October 31, 2006, in their home in Ladera Ranch, California, Nikki Catsouras and her parents shared a meal. After that, her father Christos Catsouras left for work while her mother Lesli remained at home.
Ten minutes later, Nikki’s mother saw the Porsche 911 Carrera that Christos was operating and that she was not permitted to drive backing out of the driveway. He began driving around seeking for his daughter after Lesli called him. Minutes prior to the collision, he dialed 9-1-1 by accident and was put on wait. He was taken off hold and informed of the accident by the dispatcher.
The Incident
On the 241 Toll Road in Lake Forest, Nikki was traveling at a high rate of speed when, at around 1:38 pm, she smashed into a Honda Civic while attempting to pass it on the right (160 km).
The Porsche crossed the wide middle of the road, which in that part is free of physical barriers, and struck an unmanned concrete toll booth close to the Alton Parkway interchange. The blow quickly killed Nikki. Toxicological tests revealed that she had cocaine indicators but no alcohol signs.
Leaked pictures
The event involved leaked police-taken photos, which sparked a heated debate. Two CHP workers, Aaron Reich and Thomas O’Donnell, acknowledge sharing the pictures outside of company policy. While Thomas claimed in interviews that he had only sent the images to his email account for additional viewing, Aaron said that he had shared the pictures to four other people. The parents of Catsouras found the web images. The pictures had garnered a lot of interest, and one even had a bogus MySpace tribute website linked to it.
Legal action from the family
In the Superior Court of California for Orange County, Nikki’s family filed a lawsuit against the California Highway Patrol and the two dispatch supervisors who were in charge of leaking the photos. On January 30, 2012, Nikki’s family and the CHP reached a settlement, as a result of which the family received around $2.37 million in damages compensation.
