Nolan Kay Bushnell was born in 1943 in Clearfield, Utah, to a middle-class family who were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is American and of mixed ethnicity. Less is known about his personal life; there is currently no information available on his father, mother, or siblings.
Education:
Nolan Bushnell attended Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, a nearby town. Bushnell enrolled at Utah State University in 1961, first for engineering and then for business.
In 1964, he transferred institutions and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah’s (U of U) College of Engineering.
He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Nolan was among the many 1960s computer science students who used DEC mainframe computers to play the original Spacewar! game.
Professional Career of Nolan Bushnell:
Bushnell worked a lot at Lagoon Amusement Park while attending college. After two seasons, he was appointed to manager of the games department.
During this time, he became familiar with the workings of arcade electromechanical games, such as Chicago Coin’s 1969 racing game Speedway, by observing clients play and learning how to service the equipment.
Nolan Bushnell was particularly captivated by the Midway arcade games, which required visitors to the theme park to use both talent and good fortune to complete the task and obtain the prize. He liked how the aim was to spark people’s interest in the game and then encourage them to pay the requisite fee to play.
During college, he worked for several organizations, including Hadley Ltd., Litton Guidance and Control Systems, and the University of Utah’s industrial engineering department.
Nolan Bushnell founded his own advertising agency, Campus Company, which produced blotters for four institutions and provided advertising space centered on an activities calendar throughout several summers. He also provided Encyclopedia Americana for sale.

Bushnell had moved from Utah to California after graduation in the hopes of getting a job at Disney, but the company did not typically recruit fresh college graduates. Bushnell instead accepted a position as an electrical engineer with Ampex. It was then that he met coworker Ted Dabney and learned they had similar interests.
Bushnell showed Dabney Spacewar at the computing labs of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and explained his ideas for constructing pizza parlors with electronic games.
Bushnell and Dabney started Syzygy in 1969 with the intention of developing Computer Space, a Spacewar clone. Dabney built the prototype, and Bushnell went around looking for a factory for it.
They made an agreement with Nutting Associates, a firm that manufactures shooting games and coin-op quizzes, and had them design a fiberglass cabinet with a coin-slot mechanism for the device.
Despite sales reaching $3 million, Bushnell believed that Nutting Associates had not effectively marketed Computer Space, and he decided that his next game would be licensed to a larger corporation.
Bushnell was also conscious that their target market would most likely be inebriated bargoers, thus their next game would need to be easy to play and not require users to read instructions on the cabinet.
