On May 5, 1986, Okawa Shaznay was born in Bamenda, in the North West Province of Cameroon. She grew up in the nation of her birth. At a young age, she developed an interest in theater, short films, and performing arts in her own country. She was first exposed to the world of Nollywood in the 1990s, when a torrent of Nigerian films flooded Cameroon, and she eventually came to appreciate and cherish it. At the Presbyterian Secondary School in Mankon, Bamenda, Cameroon, Okawa Shaznay finished her secondary school. Later, in 2005, she moved to the United States, where she attended Texas Southern University to study accounting and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2009.

Master DJ, Okawa Shaznay’s debut feature, was produced in Cameroon by Sarabi Pictures in 2004 just before she departed for the US. She met the All Africa Theater company while in Houston, and the two summers she traveled the country performing in their adaptation of “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe.
