Theodore Leonard Carl Pistorius, sometimes known as Oscar Pistorius, is a former professional sprinter from South Africa who was also found guilty of murder. He had both of his legs amputated when he was a baby, but he still excelled at sports. At the age of 16, he started jogging, and a few months later, he won gold in the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. At the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Oscar Pistorius competed in the disability sport T44, where he was categorized in T43. He finished third overall in the T44 100-meter event before winning the final in a pace that set a world record of 21.97 seconds. He later won gold in the 100 and 200 meters, breaking his previous 200-meter world record in the  process, and finished sixth in the non-disabled South African Championships over 400 meters in 2005 with a timing of 47.34 seconds, a world record. At the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships, he once again won gold in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter events while also breaking the 200-meter world record.

At the South African Senior Athletics Championships in Durban on March 17, 2007, and the Nedbank Championships for the Physically Disabled in Johannesburg in April 2007, he set a disability sports world record for the 400 meters (46.56 seconds). In addition, he received an invitation from the IAAF to compete in the 400-meter race at the IAAF Grand Prix in Helsinki, Finland, in July 2005. He competed in the 100, 200, and 400 meters (T44) events at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. On September 9th, he set a Paralympic record for the 100 meters with a timing of 11.16 seconds. Later, after a slow start, he came back to defeat American Jerome Singleton in the 100 meters with a time of 11.17 seconds, 0.03 seconds faster than the silver medalist. On September 13, he also won his second gold medal in the event, defeating the defending Paralympic champion in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 21.67 seconds.

Despite defeating Jerome Singleton in the 100 meters for the first time in seven years in January 2011, when he also won the T44 400 meters in 47.28 seconds and the 100 meters in 11.04 seconds at the BT Paralympic World Cup in May, he has won three IPC Athletics World titles in New Zealand. In the summer of 2011, he also participated in a number of non-disabled races. However, because he had the slowest split time—46.20 seconds—he was not chosen to compete in the finals. Later, on July 4, 2012, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) declared that he had made the Olympic teams for the 400-meter and the 4 x 400-meter relay races. On August 4, 2012, at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, he made history by being the first amputee runner to compete in an Olympic event. He finished second in the first heat of five runners with a time of 45.44 seconds, moving on to the semi-finals of the 400-meter race on August 5.
