Rotella began hosting parties as the Los Angeles rave scene began to implode in 1992 as a result of a number of opiate deaths and police raids. The festival rose from 29,000 to 120,000 guests after two years of exponential growth, accounting for 28 percent of the venue’s sales. In 2013, Rotella sold a 50% stake in Insomniac Events to Live Nation for $50 million. In the same year, Rotella teamed up with Interscope Records to form Insomniac Records, a label dedicated only to the distribution of electronic dance music. Rotella festivities annually draw over a million visitors and produce millions of dollars in revenue. On April 3, 2020, Insomniac Events stated that the EDC Las Vegas festival, curated by Pasquale Rotella, would be moved to October 2-4, but that a virtual event based on the EDC theme would be hosted on May 15-17.
