From 1981 to 1984, Romanuk volunteered for the Toronto Marlboros Sunday broadcasts on CKLN-FM, Ryerson’s campus radio. He began his career as a stats and technical equipment man for play-by-play commentator Michael Landsberg.
Romanuk’s first paid employment in broadcasting came in 1983, when he was still a Ryerson student, when he was hired as a color analyst for the Oshawa Generals junior hockey team on CKAR 1350 AM radio opposite play-by-play man Mike Inglis. By 1984, Inglis had left, and Romanuk had taken over as play-by-play announcer, a position he held until 1987.
After graduating, Romanuk worked for CBC Sports as a stats assistant and runner for Hockey Night in Canada play-by-play announcer Bob Cole, color commentator Harry Neale, and studio presenter Dave Hodge. Romanuk started working as a newsroom editorial assistant for TSN, a new all-sports cable channel, in 1985.
During the 1986-87 season, Romanuk was recruited to host the OHL Game of the Week show on Global Television Network. In October 1987, Romanuk began working as a full-time analyst and reporter for TSN.
