Pete has always enjoyed working with wood, having built small model boats with his grandfather since he was a child. He graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, standing at 6’312″ (1.92 m). While in high school in Massachusetts, Pete designed his first major treehouse, which was never built.

Professional Career

Nelson’s dream of a career in treehouses was rekindled in 1987 by the book How to Build Treehouses, Huts, and Forts by David Stiles, which was sent to him by a high school friend, and shortly thereafter, he built his first adult treehouse in his back yard in Colorado Springs, moving to Washington State that same year, where he built homes and began writing books about treehouses.

Nelson owns and operates Nelson Treehouse & Supply in Fall City, Washington, 30 miles outside of Seattle, and the business is a family affair, with wife Judy, daughter Emily, and sons Charlie and Henry all involved. Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living Out on a Limb, published in 1994, inspired him to write five more books on the subject. His most recent book, Be in a Treehouse, delves into the technical aspects of treehouse construction while also showcasing treehouses from around the world.

Nelson co-founded the Tree-House Workshop in 1997. He opened Treehouse Point, a bed-and-breakfast made entirely of treehouses, near Fall City, Washington, outside of Seattle, in 2006. Nelson Treehouse and Supply, a high-end treehouse design, construction, and supply company based in Fall City, Washington, was founded in 2011.

He has three children, in addition to his supportive wife: a daughter named Emily Nelson (born 1990) and twin sons Charlie Nelson and Henry Nelson (May 1992).

On September 18, 2017, his daughter Emily married her husband Patrick at Cleveland Botanical Gardens in front of only 28 guests, including the bride and groom. Henry Nelson, Pete’s son, is also the founder of Nelson Treehouse and Supply.

Because Pete is an active user of his social media accounts, he posts pictures of his wife and daughter Emily on a regular basis. Pete took to Twitter on September 18, 2017, to wish his daughter a happy first wedding anniversary.
