Redd Foxx’s real name is John Elroy Sanford, and he was born on December 9th, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Fred Sanford and Mary Sanford Carson. His father worked as an electrician and auto mechanic. He also has an older brother, Fred Jr., who gave him the name Sanford for his role on the successful television show “Sanford and Son.” He attended DuSable High School for his education. He met Malcolm Little, also known as Malcolm X, who was a popular minister during the civil rights struggle, in the 1940s. He avoided being selected during World War II by swallowing half a bar of soap before his physical test, which caused heart palpitations and therefore being rejected.
Personal Life:
In 1948, Redd Foxx married Evelyn Killebrew, and three years later, in 1951, they divorced. He married dancer Betty Jean Harris on July 5, 1956, after meeting her at a nightclub. Debraca, Betty’s 9-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, was with her at the time. Foxx welcomed her into his family and gave her the surname “Foxx” as well.
In May of 1974, after 18 years of marriage, Foxx filed for divorce from Betty due to incompatibility. On December 31, 1976, Foxx married Joi Yun Chin Chung. Joi, who is 20 years his junior, met Foxx at the Las Vegas Hilton, where she was working as a cocktail waitress at the time. Foxx filed for divorce in October of 1979 after the marriage didn’t survive long.
