On June 1, 1940, René Auberjonois was born in New York City, New York, in the United States. He had Swiss-French, Russian, German, and Italian ancestry and was an American citizen. He was born Rene Murat Auberjonois. His father, Fernand Auberjonois, was a Pulitzer Prize-nominated author and international journalist during the Cold War. His mother was Joachim Murat’s great-great granddaughter, Laure Louise Napoléone Eugénie Caroline Murat. Auberjonois has a sister, a brother, and two half-sisters from his mother’s first marriage. His family moved to Paris, France, after World War II. He knew from a young age that he wanted to be an actor. After living in France for a few years, his family moved back to the United States.

He attended a university in London. Auberjonois was particularly active in music and the arts in school. He received his diploma from the Institute of Technology at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1962.
