Murphy called Newfoundland Premier Joey Smallwood’s governing style dictatorial, and he called his legislature’s recent announcement of free tuition a sham. In a press conference, Smallwood warned the undergraduate student not to return. Murphy did, and he was elected President of the Memorial University Student Council as a result. Finally, the government relented. All students received the promised free tuition as well as a $50 living allowance.

Murphy ran for provincial office in Newfoundland twice, once as a Liberal in the 1985 provincial election in the riding of Placentia and once as a Conservative in a by-election in the riding of St. John’s East in 1986. He was defeated both times. In the 1980s, he also worked as Clyde Wells’ executive assistant.

Murphy announced his retirement from Cross Country Checkup on September 20th, 2015. Meanwhile, he continued to share his thoughts on The National. Murphy, like other journalists who have criticized Trump, has written numerous articles about him. Murphy described Donald Trump as a loud-mouth billionaire reality show exhibitionist with a Ferrari of an ego and a Lada of a brain in his 2016 article titled, ‘What do Rob Ford, Brexit, and Donald Trump have in common?’ Moreover, until January 2010, he wrote a column for The Globe and Mail’s Saturday edition.
