Comedian Rhod Gilbert confirms stage 4 cancer diagnosis
Rhod Gilbert revealed in July 2022 that he had been given a cancer diagnosis and was receiving treatment at Cardiff’s Velindre Cancer Centre, where he serves as a patron. In a recent interview, the comedian talked about being diagnosed with stage four cancer. He told the BBC that he first noticed anything was wrong when tumors started “popping up in places they shouldn’t,” and that he is “hopeful” about the future. The 54-year-old Rhod had to postpone many of his live performances this spring.
Speaking on Friday, December 9, to BBC Radio Wales, he said: “My neck was stiff, and my throat was excruciatingly painful. I had to postpone performances since I was experiencing a lot of difficulty breathing and we weren’t able to find the cause.” According to Wales Online, his symptoms got worse while he was in Cuba in May leading a journey to raise money for the Cardiff Velindre Cancer Centre, where he is currently undergoing treatment. He stated: “I observed lumps beginning to appear where they shouldn’t. As it turns out, I have stage 4 cancer.” Rhod, whose cancer has since undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery, claimed he also contracted the disease while on the walk.
He said: “The irony of that is that I returned from a Velindre fundraising hike with cancer and COVID. I entered as a Velindre customer and left as a patient.” He is feeling “glad, upbeat, and optimistic,” but he is unsure whether his treatment has been effective. “I’m feeling okay and feel like I’m recuperating day by day,” he told the BBC. If it is successful, he merely needs checkups, he claimed. If it didn’t go as well as he had hoped, he continued, “Perhaps I’ll have to go back for more treatment.” The Velindre Cancer Centre, of which he has been a patron for almost ten years, is, in his words, “can’t think there’s a better location in the world to be treated.” “The care I’m experiencing is beyond words,” he continued.
