Early Years and Bio

On November 21st, 1940, Richard Marcinko was born in Lansford, Pennsylvania, in the United States. He was of mixed race, being of both Slovak and Croatian ancestry, and American by nationality. His mother was from Slovakia, and his father was a Croat from Herzegovina. He was also Caucasian, and he practiced Christianity. In November 2021, Richard finally celebrated his 81st birthday, and according to his birthdate, he was a Scorpio. George Marcinko (the father) and Emilie Teresa Pavlik Marcinko were his parents (mother).

Speaking about Richard’s education, he dropped out of high school and wanted to join the US Marines, but they turned him down since he didn’t have a high school diploma. He was a radioman when he successfully enlisted in the US Navy in September 1958. In June 1961, he was admitted into the Underwater Demolition Team/Replacement (UDTR) program, and in October 1961, he received his class of 26 diploma. He had been commissioned as an ensign following his graduation from Officer Candidate School in December 1965. In June 1966, he was later transferred to SEAL Team 2. Additionally, he earned a Master of Arts in political science from Auburn University in Montgomery and a Bachelor of Arts in international relations from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

What was the Professional Career of Richard Marcinko?

Richard Marcinko had the idea for his profession when he successfully enlisted as a radioman in the US Navy in September 1958. In January 1967, he left for a six-month tour of duty in Vietnam with the 2nd Platoon of SEAL Team Two. On May 18, 1967, he led his troops in an assault on Ilo Ilo Hon (Ilo Ilo Island), where they killed a significant number of Viet Cong and destroyed six of their sampans. The U.S. Navy would later refer to this incident as the “most successful SEAL operation in the Mekong Delta.” Richard received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the Silver Star, the first of his four Bronze Stars, for conducting this expedition.

Marcinko was then promoted to Lieutenant Commander and appointed as the Naval Attache to Cambodia in 1973, following the completion of his second tour of duty in Vietnam and a two-year staff post stateside. After serving in Cambodia for 18 months, he came back to the United States and took over as commander of SEAL Team Two from 1974 to 1976.
During the Iran hostage crisis in 1979, he served as one of two Navy representatives on the TAT (Terrorist Action Team), a Joint Chiefs of Staff task force. Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Thomas B. Hayward also chose him to be the first commanding commander of this new entity. He oversaw SEAL Team Six for three years, from August 1980 to July 1983, despite it usually being a two-year assignment.

In addition, after handing over leadership of SEAL Team SIX to CDR Robert Gormly, Vice Admiral James “Ace” Lyons, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, entrusted him with designing a unit to test the Navy’s susceptibility to terrorism. The Naval Security Coordination Team OP-06D, also known as Red Cell, was this group. Richard may also be seen in a number of movies, including “G.I. Jane,” “The Rock,” and “24.” (Season 5). He also worked as a consultant for the FOX television program “24” and acted as a spokesperson for the Zodiac boat company’s Zodiac Maritime Training Academy.

Kickback trial and imprisonment

On July 13, 1989, Richard Marcinko was charged with conspiracy, conflict of interest, and lying to the government in relation to a $113,000 bribe given to Ramco International.
On January 24, 1990, he was found guilty of conspiring to defraud the government. A different count of bribery against Marcinko was likewise dismissed by the jury in that trial.
In addition, he was found guilty of cheating the government over the cost of contractor purchases of hand grenades on March 9, 1990, and was given a sentence of 21 months in federal prison and a fine of $10,000.
