Richard Speck was an average student who committed a number of juvenile crimes during his childhood and college years. In 1955, he committed his first trespassing offense and was arrested for the first time. Around 1960, he dropped out of school at the age of 16 and began working odd jobs. At the same time, he developed a drinking problem.

In 1963, he was arrested for the second time after being caught forging a coworker’s paycheck and sentenced to three years in prison for forgery. He was granted parole and released from prison after serving 16 months in prison. One week after his release, he was arrested again for stabbing a woman in the parking lot of her apartment building with a knife. Later, in 1966, he purchased a used car and used it to rob a grocery store.

After this incident, he took a bus to Illinois with the help of his sister Carolyn to avoid his 42nd. He eventually returned to his hometown of Monmouth and committed his first murder there in April 1966. He imprisoned the eight hostages in a room before stabbing or strangling them one at a time. Then, at 11 p.m., he entered the dormitory and murdered Patricia Matusek, Pamela Wilkening, Nina Jo Schmale, Suzanne Farris, Nina Jo Schmale, Merlita Gargullo, Nina Jo Schmale, Valentina Pasion, and Gloria Davy with a knife.
