Richard Speck was an average student who committed a number of juvenile crimes during his childhood and college years. In 1955, he committed his first trespassing offense and was arrested for the first time. Around 1960, he dropped out of school at the age of 16 and began working odd jobs. At the same time, he developed a drinking problem.

In 1963, he was arrested for the second time after being caught forging a coworker’s paycheck and sentenced to three years in prison for forgery. He was granted parole and released from prison after serving 16 months in prison. One week after his release, he was arrested again for stabbing a woman in the parking lot of her apartment building with a knife. Later, in 1966, he purchased a used car and used it to rob a grocery store.

After this incident, he took a bus to Illinois with the help of his sister Carolyn to avoid his 42nd. He eventually returned to his hometown of Monmouth and committed his first murder there in April 1966. In his first murder, he killed a 32-year-old barmaid working at a local tavern in Monmouth with a blow to the stomach.

On April 30, 1966, he began working as a crewman on the freight ship “Clarence B Randall” after his brother-in-law Gene Thornton recommended him. Soon after, he developed severe appendicitis and had to be removed on May 3 for an emergency operation. On July 8, 1966, he applied for a seaman’s card at the National Maritime Union. Later, he was offered a position on a ship but lost out to a more experienced seaman.

On July 13, 1966, he returned to the NMU and spent the rest of the day drinking at a local tavern. He then approached a 53-year-old woman at the bar, abducted her, and raped her in his room. Later that night, dressed in black, he walked to the nurses’ boarding house, carrying a handgun and a switchblade. He imprisoned the eight hostages in a room before stabbing or strangling them one at a time. Then, at 11 p.m., he entered the dormitory and murdered Patricia Matusek, Pamela Wilkening, Nina Jo Schmale, Suzanne Farris, Nina Jo Schmale, Merlita Gargullo, Nina Jo Schmale, Valentina Pasion, and Gloria Davy with a knife.

He imprisoned the eight hostages for several hours before stabbing or strangling them one by one. Gloria Davy, his last victim, was raped before he strangled him. Cora Amurao was the only survivor of the attack because she hid under a bed when he left the room and stayed there until the next morning.
