With his close friend Ralph Tresvant, Ricky  formed a duo named Ricky and Ralph in 1978. Together with Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, and Ronnie DeVoe, they founded the group New Edition. Over the course of more than 30 years, New Edition has become a household name During the mid-80s, when Bobby Brown had left the group, Johnny Gill joined it. Despite the fact that Ricky  had the option of going solo, he chose to establish BBD alongside Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe.
