Biography and Early Life
Rigathi Gachagua was born in Hiriga Village, Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, in 1965. He was born on the eighth day of the eighth month of the eighth year. He is the late Governor of Nyeri Nderitu Gachagua’s brother. His father and mother were liberation warriors in the Mt Kenya jungle, where his father built and serviced weaponry for the rebels.
When he was old enough, he enrolled in Kabiruini Primary School from 1971 to 1977. He attended Kianyaga High School for his o-levels and A-levels after finishing primary school. Later, in 1985, he enrolled in the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Literature in 1988.
Gachagua was the leader of the Nyeri District University Students Association [Ndusa] at the University of Kabyanga. He was also the president of The Association of Literature Students.

Career
Following his academic studies, he worked briefly for the Kenya Ministry of Home Affairs and National Heritage before joining the Administration Police Institute. His graduation from the Administration Police Institute was successful, and he was assigned as a District Officer Cadet to the Office of the then-President Daniel Arap Moi. He eventually worked as a District Officer in Kakamega, Laikipia, and Ng’arua districts.
Later, between 1999 and 2000, he enrolled in the Kenya School of Government, where he earned a Diploma in Advanced Public Administration. Returning to school enabled him to work as the Personal Assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta, the current President of the Republic of Kenya, between 2001 and 2006. From 2007 through 2017, Gachagua remained behind the scenes, handling his businesses. He was elected as a Kenyan Member of Parliament for the Mathira Constituency in the 2017 general election.
Rigathi Gchagua was nominated as the running mate of UDA presidential candidate William Ruto under the Kenya Kwanza political coalition on May 15, 2022. National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, and Kandara MP Alice Wahome were among those vying for the same position. Despite being Ruto’s running mate, he is recognized as a mobilizer.
