Robbie Gould is a professional football player in the National Football League (NFL). He is presently a placekicker for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. He formerly played professional football for the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, among other organizations. Gould has been a member of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team since he was a little child.

He used to play a variety of sports before deciding to focus solely on football. Robbie spent a decade in the NFL with the Chicago Bears after failing to be selected in the 2005 NFL draft. Robbie attended Central Mountain High School in Pennsylvania while growing up. He became heavily active in extracurricular activities in addition to his education. He excelled in a variety of sports, particularly soccer, football, basketball, and track & field. Gould was primarily interested in and played American soccer during his high school years, owing to his father’s influence. He changed his mind after transferring to Penn State University and switched to football. Robbie further completed his education and graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Robbie Gould College Career

In 2001, Robbie Gould enrolled at Penn State University. He had no specific plans to pursue a career in athletics at first. Robbie majored in Business Management and dedicated a significant amount of time to his education. He was, nevertheless, interested in soccer and had participated in a few games. Gould quickly became disillusioned with soccer and moved to football. At first, his college football coaches did not trust him and only gave him limited playing time.

As a result, he asked his high school principal to write Joe Paterno, the then-head football coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, a letter of recommendation. Soon after, the head coach invited him to join the Nittany Lions on a regular basis. However, he did not have a successful collegiate career. With a field goal percentage of 63.9, he could only make 39 of 61 field goals. He graduated from college in 2004 and declared for the NFL draft the following year.

A Professional Life

He went undrafted in the 2005 NFL draft, as expected, due to his lackluster college stats. However, Gould was signed by the New England Patriots prior to the 2005 NFL preseason. He signed a deal with the Baltimore Ravens the next year before being released. Unfortunately, the team was uninterested and released him three weeks later. Following that, he took a hiatus from football and went to work for M&R Contracting in Pennsylvania before joining the NFL’s Chicago Bears.

Bears of Chicago

On October 8, 2005, Robbie signed with the Chicago Bears. A week later, against the Cleveland Browns, he scored his first NFL goal. They did, however, lose the match. He scored his first game-winning goal against the New Orleans Saints in Week 9. He had a 77 percent field goal percentage in his rookie season. In his second NFL season, Robbie improved dramatically and had a fantastic year, making 26 consecutive field goals. He broke Kevin Butler’s record for most field goals with this.

He also received other awards, including being named the NFL’s kicker for the 2007 Pro Bowl by NFL fans. He was chosen to the 2006 Associated Press All-Pro Team. In addition, he concluded the 2007 season with an 86.11 percent goal attempt rate. After then, Robbie played in every game for the Chicago Bears in the NFL, and he always performed admirably until 2011. His numbers improved over time, as he went from a middling college performer to the Bears’ most popular player. In 2012, he had a calf injury and was forced to sit out for over a year.

He returned to the game the following year, scoring the longest field goal in Bears history against the Cincinnati Bengals in the season’s first game. On December 13, he signed a four-year contract extension with the organization. He also became the second player in Chicago history to reach 1000 points in the 2013 season. In 2014, Robbie played in 12 games for the Bears, making 9 of 12 field-goal tries. However, he was forced to take a break after suffering a quad injury. On November 20, he faced his previous team, the Chicago Bears, and scored a 46-yard field goal. Gould was a standout performer for the Giants, converting 10 of his 10 field-goal attempts into goals. After the 2016 season, though, the team waived him.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed Robbie Gould to a two-year contract for the 2017 NFL season. In his first game, he kicked a 44-yard field goal against the Carolina Panthers. Regrettably, they suffered a humiliating defeat. Despite this, he enjoyed a fantastic first season with his new club. In a game against the Tennessee Titans, Gould scored six field goals, marking him the first 49ers player to do so since 1996.

In the 2018 season, he maintained his strong performance.
