Robert Peston worked briefly as a stockbroker at Williams de Broë, then a journalist at Investors Chronicle in 1983, and joined The Independent newspaper when it was founded in 1986. Peston served as Deputy City Editor for the short-lived Sunday Correspondent newspaper from 1989 to 1990 before becoming Independent City Editor on Sunday, 1990.
Peston worked at the Financial Times from 1991 to 2000. He has served as Political Editor, Banking Editor, and director of an investigation section at the Financial Times (which he formed).
