When he was in his early twenties, he wrote a screenplay called The Last Woman on Earth (1960), which was picked up by renowned director and producer Roger Corman. This was his big break. Towne, whose family was Jewish, was born in Romania on his mother’s side and in Russia on his father’s. Helen and Lou Schwartz welcomed him into the world in San Pedro, Los Angeles.
