In March 2009, he successfully underwent surgery to replace his aortic valve, fix his mitral valve, and rectify his erratic pulse. In 2014, he entered the Hazelden Foundation Addiction Treatment Center in Minnesota to recover from his drinking.
On August 11, 2014, Williams hanged himself at his house in Paradise Cay, California. Williams had widespread Lewy body dementia, according to an autopsy report.
