Penrose had interim positions at different colleges in England and the United States after receiving his Ph.D. in 1957. He was a scholar of applied mathematics at Birkbeck College, London, from 1964 until 1973. Meanwhile, in 1969, he proved that all matter within a black hole collapses to a singularity alongside Stephen Hawking. He began the Rouse-Ball Chair of Mathematics at the University of Oxford in 1973. As a Mathematician, he spent his career trying to figure out how the Black Hole came to be.
Honors and Awards
Penrose was awarded half of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020 for discovering the black hole development. He was granted the ‘Commandino Medal’ at Urbino University in 2017 for his contributions to the history of science. Penrose received an honorary doctorate from Warsaw University in 2005.
