Anna Marie claims that she and Charmaine experienced frequent physical and psychological abuse when they were living in Rose’s care at Midland Road. According to medical records, Charmaine was treated for a severe puncture wound to her left ankle on March 28, 1971, at the casualty department of the Gloucester Royal Hospital. Rose claimed that this episode was the outcome of a home mishap. She is thought to have murdered Charmaine just days before Fred was scheduled to be released from prison on June 24, 1971. Like the Giles family, Rose said that Catherine “Rena” West, Fred’s ex-wife, had called and taken her eldest daughter to live with her in Bristol when people inquired about Charmaine’s location.

Marie, who was of full English ancestry while Charmaine was of part-Asian ancestry, recalls that when she asked Fred coldly why her mother had collected Charmaine but not her, he coldly replied, “She wouldn’t want you, love. You’re the wrong color.” This is according to Anna’s autobiography, “Out of the Shadows.” Rena sought to approach Fred after being given his address on Midland Road with the intention of discussing or requesting custody of her girls. Rena was last spotted alive at this point. She was allegedly strangled to death, most likely while Fred was drunk and maybe in the backseat of his Ford Popular. At Letterbox Field, the body was severely dissected, put into plastic bags, and buried close to Yewtree Coppice, a group of trees.

Initial sexual assaults

In September 1972, the Wests took Anna Marie, then eight years old, down the cellar of 25 Cromwell Street, where they told her to take off her clothes. When Anna Marie hesitated, Rose tore her garment away from her body. She was then stripped of her clothes, restrained to a mattress, and given a gag before Fred sexually assaulted her with Rose’s enthusiastic support. From the age of 13, Fred and Rose forced Anna Marie into prostitution while pretending she was 16. In October 1972, the Wests hired Caroline Owens, then 17 years old, to take care of their kids.

After visiting her partner in Tewkesbury, she hitchhiked to her home in Cinderford, where they picked her up one night on a quiet country road. On December 6, 1972, the pair enticed Owens into their car by apologizing for their behavior and offering to drive him home. The Wests were detained after Owens’ mother promptly reported her daughter’s trauma to the police, who then charged the couple with rape, assault, and indecent assault. On January 12, 1973, the matter was heard at Gloucester Magistrates Court, but by this time, Owens had already made up her mind that she couldn’t endure the stress of giving a witness statement.

Investigation and arrest

After his incarceration in February 1994, Rose murdered Shirley Robinson and helped in her dismemberment, removing Robinson’s foetus from the womb in the process, Fred revealed to his proper adult, Janet Leach. Heather West, who was murdered in June 1987 at the age of 16 after experiencing parental violence her entire life, was another body discovered at Cromwell Street.

On August 6, 1992, Rose was arrested for child abuse, and Fred was detained once again after being suspected of raping his daughter, who was then thirteen, three times. When their daughter declined to testify in court on June 7, 1993, the prosecution’s case against them was abandoned. In February 1994, Rose and Fred were detained after police discovered human bones and what appeared to be traces of torture at 25 Cromwell Street. Almost immediately after being found guilty, she appealed her ten murder convictions to the Court of Appeal. However, the Court of Appeal rejected her request for an appeal to be heard on March 18, 1996.

In September 2001, she declared her innocence while stating that she would not be filing an appeal.
