Ross worked as a newspaper delivery boy and in the US Navy before joining IBM as a salesman. Then, in 1957, he left the US Navy and went to work for IBM as a salesperson. After a few years, he decided to venture out and founded Electronic Data System in 1962, which offered data processing systems and services to businesses.

His company grew quickly, and when he took EDS public, he became a millionaire. Then, over time, his company rose to the position of billionaire. Then, in 1984, General Motors purchased a controlling stake in EDS, giving Ross GM stock and cash. After two years, he sold GM stock at the company’s request. Ross went on to develop the Perot System, a business venture.

Aside from business, Ross became involved in the Vietnam War’s missing soldiers and prisoner of war issues. He even conducted an independent presidential campaign in 1992, and before 1995, he joined an independent political party. He received 18.9% of the vote as a presidential contender during that time, but no electoral votes. Ross waged a third-party candidacy in 1996 when he created the Reform Party. From 2000 to 2019, he was a member of the Republican Party.
