Shimazaki left his soccer career in Japan and relocated to the United States to pursue his higher education. He had trouble adjusting to American society and the linguistic barrier because he didn’t speak English.

On April 19, 1997, Ryo Shimazaki was born in Kawasaki, Japan. He was inspired to play soccer professionally by his father, who was an avid supporter of the sport.

Shimazaki was eventually addicted to soccer after having fond memories of watching it with his father. Ryo was selected for the Kawasaki Frontale U-12 team while he was still in the fourth grade of elementary school. He joined the Kawasaki Frontale Academy Program for eight years and used to play as an offensive player.

Shimazaki thought that enrolling in Kawasaki Football Academy would advance his soccer career. He claimed that’s where he picked up the fundamentals of soccer.

He has played for the Japan Under-16 Under 17 Youth National Team. Ryo attended Tachibana High School and put equal emphasis on his academics and soccer career.

 Soccer Career:

VCU

In spite of moving to the United States for higher education, Ryo continued to play soccer. In order to play collegiate soccer, he moved to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

Shimazaki aspired to combine his studies and soccer career. He therefore met with coaches who assisted him in developing his career.

On August 28, 2016, he made his debut against the University of Nevada, and during his rookie season, he played in a total of 14 games.

He participated in 19 games as an outside back during his second season. Shimazaki continued to advance professionally with six points—two goals and two assists.

On October 4, 2017, he scored his first-ever football goal against Davidson. In the end, Ryo and his team triumphed 4-1 to win the game.

Shimazaki initially started off as an outside back for the first 18 games of the junior college season, recording one goal and three assists.

Champions of the Atlantic 10 regular season

Ryo was named to the VaSID second team all-state team and assisted VCU in winning the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship in 2018. In his senior year, Ryo started 18 games at outside back and netted 4 goals.

On October 9, 2019, the former player also scored in a game against Dayton, which the team won 2-1. In the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10, he also scored on a penalty against George Maison.

He also received the Player of the Week award on September 30, 2019, and was selected to the A-10 first team.

Shimazaki played in 69 games over the course of four seasons when he was a student at VCU, recording seven goals and six assists.

MLS SuperDraft in 2020

Columbus Crew SC selected Ryo in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. He was eventually chosen for the 2020 MLS SuperDraft after making it to the third round of the draft.

Ryo was one step closer to realizing his dream of playing in the Major League Soccer. But due to his nationality, Ryo was unable to attend.

Shimazaki, however, got a different offer from New England Revolution II. He was hesitant at first to accept the offer, but he did. Shimazaki did not participate in the drafts because he accepted the offer.

When questioned about it, Ryo said he didn’t know if he’d make it or not, so he’d rather be cautious than sorry.

A second New England Revolution

Shimazaki joined the New England Revolution II on January 16, 2020, following two unsuccessful tries. He participated in 14 games in USL League One, scoring one goal.

The New England Patriots rejected his contract option on November 30, 2020.
