Sandy Koufax was born to a Jewish household on December 30, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised in Borough Park by his parents, Jack and Evelyn Braun. When he was three years old, his parents got divorced, and when he was nine, his mother remarried. His mother remarried and the family moved to Rockville Center on Long Island.

He went to Lafayette High School and was a skilled basketball player. He started playing at the Community Center because there were no school sports available at the time. After high school, he enrolled in the University of Cincinnati.

He persisted in giving the game his all, although the early years were difficult for him. During the 1961 season, he stood out by developing improved conditions. His reign of terror lasted from 1961 to 1964. In 1965, he was forced to play the game in agony since his arm was bleeding. He threw his eighth and sixth left-handed perfect games on September 9, 1965, becoming the sixth pitcher in the modern era to accomplish this feat.

In contrast to other players who use a three-quarter motion, he throws the ball with an over-the-top arm motion. His faster speed lessens the lateral displacement of the pitch. In 1967, he gave up playing baseball and agreed to a ten-year, $1 million broadcasting deal with NBC to host the SATURDAY GAME OF THE WEEK show. At the end of six years, he quit. In 1972, he was admitted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He started working with the BASEBALL ASSISTANCE TEAM and now does so only.
