Sarah Marantz Lindenberg is Pink Tartan’s marketing and e-commerce director, as well as the founder and president of NITE CAP. However, her new bonnet “NiteCaps” for $98 sparked controversy, and many people believe that a white woman would claim to have invented something that Black women have long worn.
The main issue is that she did not invent the bonnet, and Marantz Lindenberg claims in an interview with Fashion Magazine that her “concept came out of a problem that needed to be solved.”
She was later quoted as saying she was getting ready for her wedding and, “like a lot of brides, wanted everything to be perfect.” she did, however, have pimples. Sarah said she saw two doctors: “A dermatologist advised me to sleep with my hair pulled back.” Another doctor suggested I try silk scarves…”
She stated that when her hair was not in her face, her acne cleared up. Furthermore, she discovered that sleeping with silk scarves in her hair made it “shinier, thicker, and my blowouts lasted longer.”
In an interview with Fashion Magazine, she stated that her “concept” arose from her frustration with acne breakouts prior to her wedding, and that after consulting with two doctors, both of whom advised her to keep her hair away from her face at night, she “created” a bonnet, in this case silk and costing nearly $100.
Sarah faced backlash from several black women after a Twitter user named Ambrosious wrote, “So let me get this straight. A white woman is profiting from satin bonnets (FOR NINETY-EIGHT GOTDAMN DOLLARS) as if it’s some new invention. My black grandmother, who yelled at me for not wearing my bonnet at night, is rolling in her grave, I know it.”
Another user commented, “Please stop appropriating everything from Black people, pretending you invented it, and charging exorbitant prices for it.” Those are sleep bonnets, and they’ve been around for a long time in every beauty supply store.”
According to Forbes magazine, her product is among the “Best the World of Wellness Has to Offer.” Sarah’s Instagram, however, has been set to private following the outcry, but on the NiteCap Instagram page, she wrote:
“NiteCap was created as a result of my search for a product that looked and performed exactly as I desired for my personal use. It was important to me that the product was made in Canada and out of natural fabrics. A small business grew quickly, but I failed to connect it to its broader historical context. We stand with those who have been harmed, and we respect and listen to their voices. We are dedicated to preserving the historical significance of hair wrapping, and this will now be a part of our approach.”
