Career
He joined his father’s Christian Democracy (DC) party in 1983, which marked the beginning of his formal political career. After that, Sergio Mattarella was chosen to join the chamber of deputies. In 1987 and 1989, he pursued appointments as the minister of legislative affairs and of education, respectively.
In 1994, his party was disbanded as a result of a corruption scandal. Together with other Christian Democrats, he was a key player in the founding of the Italian People’s Party (PPI). From 1998 until 2001, Mattarella served as both the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense. Before taking office as the president of the Italian Republic, he served as a judge on the constitutional Court. On February 3, 2015, Sergio took the oath of office as president.
