How was the childhood of Shakuntala Devi?

On November 4, 1929, in Bangalore, Karnataka, Shakuntala Devi was born. At the time of her passing, she was 83 years old. Her mother’s identity is unclear, but her father, C V Sundararaja Rao, is the one who gave birth to her. Her father joined a circus and performed as a trapeze artist, lion tamer, tightrope walker, and magician rather than becoming a priest in the temple.

He taught Shakuntala a card trick when she was 3 years old, and that’s when he realized she could memorize numbers. His father quickly quit the circus after realizing this and wandered the streets with her daughter to demonstrate her gift to the rest of the world. She also had Indian nationality, but it was unclear what race she belonged to.

Education

Additionally, she did this without a formal education. When she was six years old, she debuted her arithmetic prowess at the University of Mysore. In 1944, Devi moved to London, Great Britain.

Analytical Thinking

  • Devi visited numerous countries to demonstrate her mastery of mathematics. She went on a tour of Europe in 1950 and came to New York City in 1976. In 1988, she flew to the US so that University of California, Berkeley professor of educational psychology Arthur Jensen could assess her skills. Jensen tested her on a number of challenges, including working with enormous numbers.
  • Devi was tasked with solving issues like computing the cube root of 61,629,875 and the seventh root of 170,859,375. Jensen asserted that Devi provided him the answers to the previous questions (395 and 15, respectively), before he could record them. Jensen published a report on his findings in the academic journal Intelligence in 1990.
  • In 1977 at Southern Methodist University, she gave the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in just 50 seconds. Her answer of 546,372,891 was verified by calculations made by the UNIVAC 1101 computer at the US Bureau of Standards, for which a special program had to be built to handle such a big computation and which took longer to finish than her own.
  • On June 18 of same year, she multiplied two 13-digit numbers, 7,686,369,774,870 and 2,465,099,745,779 as well. These numbers were selected at random by the computing department of Imperial College London. She accurately responded 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 in 28 seconds.
  • In 1982, the Guinness Book of World Records included this incident. Author Steven Smith stated that “the result is so far superior to anything previously reported that it can only be described as unbelievable.” Shakuntala Devi provided a detailed description of several of the methods she employed to carry out calculations in her head in her 1977 book Figuring: The Joy of Numbers.

Book on homosexuality

She faced criticism for her 1977 book The World of Homosexuals, which was the first scholarly study of homosexuality to be published in India. She claimed in the film For Straights Only that her interest in the topic sprang from the fact that she was married to a homosexual man and wanted to understand more about it.

The “pioneering” book features interviews with two gay young men from India, a male couple attempting to get married legally in Canada, a temple priest stating his opinions on homosexuality, and a summary of the literature already written on the topic. At the end, a call for “full and complete acceptance, not tolerance and sympathy” and the decriminalization of homosexuality is made. But at the time, the work was widely disregarded.
