Bio, Age, Nationality, Ethnicity, Parents, Siblings and Education

Sheen Gurrib was born in Mauritius on May 22, 1993, into a low-income family. Born and raised in Mauritius. Financial difficulties forced her father to leave university; he subsequently found employment in Mauritius as a road transport inspector.

Gurrib, Sheen’s fifth great-grandfather, was just 7 years old when he boarded a ship in India and landed in Mauritius in 1856 to serve as an indentured worker. His condition of living was appalling; he was an indentured laborer in a sugarcane field when he arrived in Mauritius. He came from the Indian town of Gorah Bazar and had no first name.

Her fourth great-grandfather was illiterate and employed in the fields as well. Sarah Gurrib, Sheen’s older sister, works for herself as a human rights consultant and resides in the US.

Education: High School, College and University

Sheen completed her education in Mauritius. Later, she relocated to the UK to attend university, following in her sister’s footsteps. Sheen left Mauritius at the age of eighteen and enrolled at the University of Oxford in 2011 to pursue a four-year Materials Science undergraduate and master’s program.

She received a 2.1 when she graduated in 2015. Sheen applied to both the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge for a PhD after graduating, but she chose to pursue her studies at Oxford since she had such a great experience there.

Sadly, her funding collapsed just one month before she was supposed to start her PhD program because the company funding it filed for bankruptcy, and Oxford postponed her admission until the following year. Sheen decided to take a year off and went back to Mauritius.

After initially offering her a PhD seat, the Cambridge research team eventually managed to acquire some money for her PhD, and she enrolled at the University of Cambridge in 2017 to pursue a PhD in Biomedical/Medical Engineering.

Sheen was named a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum in June 2019. In 2019, she finished her doctorate. Sheen was the first female Mauritius student to enroll in both Cambridge and Oxford.

Professional Career of Sheen Gurrib:

In January 2018, she established Project Access for Refugees in London, where she continued to work part-time until May 2020. For a few months in 2020, Sheen worked as an intern at PharmEnable as a Healthcare Market Analyst.

She quickly came to the realization that she couldn’t continue in academia while pursuing her PhD because it required her to spend most of her time in a lab conducting science; additionally, she didn’t enjoy working alone on her project and believed that obtaining a PhD would only provide her with specialized knowledge that would be difficult to apply broadly.

Sheen also felt that completing a PhD required a lot of work and was not creative. Instead of pursuing a PhD, she chose not to pursue a career in academia because she preferred to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting and try a variety of things.

Sheen was interested in consulting at the time, and after seeing how many SMEs, startups, and charities were failing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she and her friends founded ReShape Co. in June 2020 in London as a pro-bono consulting effort. She worked here until September 2021.

In November 2020, she launched her podcast, Dream, Girl, which focuses on women’s empowerment. Sheen’s first TEDx Talk, “Relearning the ABCs of girls’ education,” was the result of this in 2021. On March 29, 2021, she launched her own YouTube channel under the same name and began posting videos there.

More on Career

From January 2021 to September 2021, Sheen was employed as a Project Manager at the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, for Map the System. After that, she was employed by Oliver Wyman in Dubai from September 2021 until September 2022 as a Consultant.

Sheen was first offered a position in Oliver Wyman’s London office, but she relocated there when she heard about an opening because the pay was greater there than in London, there were no taxes, and Dubai was closer to Mauritius, her home country.

Her work-life balance was poor, despite her love of the work, and she was unable to maintain it over time even though at the time her content was growing and she was receiving sponsorships and brand deals for her podcast and YouTube channel.

Sheen has always been creative, so she enjoyed creating material more than going to work. At the time, her demanding job didn’t leave her with the time or energy to create content.

She made the decision to apply her experience in both content development and business from her time working as a manager and consultant. As a result, she accepted a position as Chief Operations Officer at Khalid Al Ameri Media in the United Arab Emirates. From September 2022 to February 2023, Sheen was employed here.

YouTube:

Living with well-known YouTuber Ali Abdaal, Sheen made the decision to expand the audience for her podcast and boost its interaction. Ali advised her to launch a YouTube channel at the time since she could get more comments on her videos and video podcasts would receive more attention than audio podcasts.

Sheen then launched her YouTube channel and on April 5, 2021, released her debut video, “Welcome to Dream, Girl!.” She started posting frequent videos on her channel in addition to video podcasts. Sheen has 152K Instagram followers and 45.1K channel subscribers as of March 2024. She owns a website.
