In a memorial letter sent to mom and uploaded on Facebook, her daughter verified her death “You passed away early this morning, April 22nd, and your precious soul has gone to a better place. I was by your side, and you passed away in peace. To me, you were ‘simply mom,’ but to others, you were ‘Miss Knight,’ ‘Miss Shirley,’ ‘Mama Shirley,’ ‘Shirl the Girl,’ and ‘Shirley Knight,’ respectively.”

Shirley was married to American actor and producer Gene Persson from 1959 until their divorce in 1969, according to her personal life. Kaitlin Hopkins was their only child.
