In 1970, at the age of four, Manson and her older sister performed in front of an audience at the local Church Hill Theatre. She then joined her high school’s music department, City of Edinburgh Music School, where she played in a variety of musicals and dramas, including “The American Dream” and “The Wizard of Oz.” She was also a member of the Waverley Singers, a local girl choir. Martin Metcalfe, the lead vocalist of the band Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, approached Manson while she was performing with her band. She accepted the offer and, in 1984, recorded her debut single with them, “Death of a Salesman.” After earning a major-label record deal with Capitol Records in 1987, they released their first album, Good Deeds and Dirty Rags. They also released the single “The Rattler,” which became their sole top 40 hit in the United Kingdom.

The Mackenzie contract was then purchased by another record label, Radioactive Record, which is owned by Gary Kurfirst, and they were able to release their second album. Kurdish, on the other hand, had lost interest in Mackenzie and showed desire in creating an album with Manson. Manson was signed as a solo artist. She then added a new group, Angelfish, to the mix. They released the song “Suffocate Me,” which had a 120-minute music video on MTV. After seeing the show, Steve Marker, a producer and musician, decided to enlist Manson in his band, Garbage, which was also produced by Duke Erikson and Butch Vig. Vig then invited Manson to an audition at Smart Studios. However, the test failed, and she returned to Angelfish. When the Angelfish imploded, Manson returned to the Smart Studio for a second chance. She was successful this time, and once Radioactive granted her permission to work with Garbage, she became a full-time member. Garbage’s debut album, Garbage (published in August 1995), went on to sell over 4 million copies, and Manson immediately established himself as the band’s public face. She rose to become the band’s primary songwriter. She sang and authored a lot of the group’s songs.
