His birth name is Sir Roger George Moore. He was born in London, England, on October 14, 1927.

He was the only child of George Alfred Moore, a police officer, and Lillian “Lily” Pope. His mother was born in Calcutta, India, and is of English descent.

Moore attended Battersea Grammar School, but was evacuated to Holsworthy, Devon, during WWII and attended Launceston College.

He continued his education at Dr. Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, before enrolling at the University of Durham’s College of the Venerable Bede but failing to graduate.

Moore dropped out of school at the age of 15 and began working for Publicity Picture Productions, a London-based film business, as an animation apprentice.

Moore’s initial attempt into film, however, ended horribly when he was promptly sacked after making his debut in a tiny role in Caesar and Cleopatra (1945).

In his first break, director Brian Desmond Hurst observed Moore, liked what he saw, and secured him a spot in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts while also paying his tuition.

Moore’s building career, however, was cut short at the age of 18 when the Army called, and he remained in the service for nearly three years, stationed in Germany, during which time he married actress Doorn van Steyn for the first of four times.

Then he returned to London to resume his acting career, which proved to be an uphill battle.

Moore “The Saint” remarried (to singer Dorothy Squires) in 1953, relocated to the United States, and soon secured a role on television’s World by Tail.

Moore’s phone finally rang, and it was major Hollywood studios on the other end of the line, including Warner Bros., Paramount, and MGM, all requesting appointments.

Moore was eventually hired by MGM for $250 per week and starred in his first major film, The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954).

Moore remained active after that, playing in Interrupted Melody (1995), The King’s Thief (1955), and Diane (1956), the latter being his first leading role.

However, it also signaled the end of Moore’s MGM contract, as none of these pictures drove him to prominence, and he jumped ship, signing with Warner Bros.
