Rapper AKA from South Africa, real name Kiernan Forbes, died on Friday night after being shot outside a Durban restaurant. He was 35 at the time.
Tony and Lynn Forbes, the parents of Rapper AKA, informed Rolling Stone on Saturday that their son had passed away.
We confirm the unfortunate and untimely demise of our darling son on the evening of February 10, 2023, and we acknowledge his passing with the utmost regret. The Durban police have not yet provided us with more information, the parents said.

The statement read, “To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. Most importantly, he was the father of his beloved daughter Kairo. “To many, he was known as AKA, Supa Mega, Bhova, and a host of other affectionate nicknames given to him by his devoted following. Our son received love and returned it.
The South African police told regional news organizations, according to the New York Times, that AKA was accosted by two armed males as she was leaving a well-known nightclub on Friday at 10 p.m. Before leaving the area, the two attackers shot Forbes multiple times.
According to a source close to Rapper AKA, Tebello Motsoane, a 34-year-old cook and the rapper’s close friend, was also fatally shot during the altercation.

The two suspects have not yet been located by law enforcement.
The small daughter that the late South African hip-hop legend shared with D.J. Zinhle is his only surviving child.
