Malkmus, who was born in the wonderful city of Santa Monica, California, had a revolutionary youth that included being arrested for underage drinking and being expelled from school. He learned to play guitar by imitating Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” and began performing in punk bands at the age of 16.

Career of Stephen Malkmus:

After graduating from university, Malkmus formed the band Pavement. Slanted & Enchanted, their debut album, received critical acclaim, and they were hailed as founders of the indie movement in the 1990s. Pavement will tour the world again in 2010, 2022, and 2023.

Stephen, a Pavement ex-member, released his first album with his new band, The Jicks, in 2001. He has subsequently made numerous more albums with The Jicks, including 2008’s Real Emotional Trash and 2011’s Mirror Traffic. He served the entire album Ege Bamyasi by Can at a festival in Germany in 2012, which was later released as a live record.

Throughout his career, Malkmus has been involved in a variety of side ventures. He was a member of Sonic Youth’s Kim’s Bedroom side project and performed with The Jicks. Despite not being a huge Dylan fan, he contributed songs to the 2007 film I’m Not There, which was based on Bob Dylan’s biography. He composed the soundtrack for the Netflix series Flaked in 2016.
