Steve Brookstein On The X Factor 2004

Early in 2004, Steve Brookstein participated in an audition for The X Factor, a brand-new television talent competition that sought to identify a rising recording star in the UK. Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne, two of the judges, weren’t impressed with Brookstein’s performance, although Simon Cowell asked him to perform again the following day.

This time, Brookstein won over the other judges, moving on to the next stage of the competition. When Brookstein and the other two competitors in his age group (25 and up) made it to the televised finals, Simon Cowell served as their coach.

He and G4 won the live finals, and according to Sharon Osbourne’s autobiography, they both advanced to the grand final. On December 11, 2004, he was crowned The X Factor champion with two thirds of the vote.

Steve Brookstein’s First Album Heart and Soul.

After winning The X-Factor, Steve Brookstein was immediately signed to the Sony BMG record company. His debut single, a cover of Against All Odds, was released on December 20, 2004. On the UK Singles Chart, the song debuted at number two before moving up to the top spot on January 8, 2005, where it stayed for one week.

In Ireland, the song peaked at number 11. His time on The X-Factor, from his first audition to his final performance after winning the competition, were collaged into the music video for the song.

On May 9, 2005, Sony BMG published Brookstein’s debut album, Heart & Soul, five months after his first single reached the top of the charts. Over 250,000 copies of the album were sold, and it debuted at number one on the UK charts. Despite not releasing a second single, Brookstein kept performing songs from his album.

Only eight months after winning The X-Factor, Sony BMG dropped him from their roster in August 2005, despite the popularity of his debut single and album. He allegedly was let go because he insisted on having a lot of original songs on his subsequent album rather than deciding to release a second album of covers.

After continuing to work hard, Brookstein released his second album, 40,000 Things, on October 9, 2006. The record, which only managed to rank #165 on the Billboard 200, was a commercial flop.

From September through November 2006, Brookstein promoted his new record with a state-wide tour of intimate venues. Though several of the events were sold out, some had to be postponed because of weak ticket sales. On the P&O Portsmouth to Bilbao ship in June 2007, Chico Slimani and Journey South and Brookstein performed as a cabaret act.
