On August 22, 1945, Steve Kroft was born in Kokomo, Indiana. The lone child of father Fred and mother Margaret Kroft. At birth, he was given the name Stephen F. Kroft. At Syracuse University, where he pursued his studies, he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1967. After receiving his degree, he joined the American Army and served in the Vietnam War, where he earned numerous Army media medals.

In 1971, he received an honorable discharge from the military. He then went on to work as a reporter for WSYR-TV and pursue a career in broadcast journalism. In 1974, he entered the classroom once more by enrolling in the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. In a similar vein, he earned his master’s in 1975.Before moving to Florida, he had worked for two stations owned by the Washington Post Company.Similar to this, he moved to WPLG-TV in Miami, where CBS News came across his work in 1977.
