Steve, a resident of Brooklyn, New York, competed in the Teenage Mr. America – AAU in 1968 and placed third. Later, in 1969, he was crowned Mr. Western New York State.

Between 1972 and 1975, Michalik was a frequent guest on The Mike Douglas Show. He created a biographical documentary, Pumping Iron II: The Women, in 1985, after retiring from professional bodybuilding.

After the birth of their first child, Steven Andrew Michalik, Jr., the couple received the blessing. Their son is now a happily married man, and he and his adored wife, Melissa Michalik (Steve’s daughter-in-law), have two gorgeous children.

Steve Competello Michalik, Thomasina Competello Michalik’s late husband, struggled with health issues throughout his bodybuilding career. His bodybuilding coach recommended him to retire from bodyweight lifting in the 1980s due to his steroid use.
Steve utilized steroids during bodybuilding competitions, which led to a heart attack, liver tumors the size of baseballs, and kidney illness. In 2011, he underwent kidney transplant surgery.
Michalik stopped using steroids after the operation and began living a healthy lifestyle. At his gym, he continued to train and motivate a number of young and aspiring bodybuilders.
Steve, on the other hand, struggled with depression for years after he stopped using the steroids pills. Later, he chose to take his own life by shooting himself in the wound. Furthermore, on May 24, 2012, his wife, Thomasina, discovered him dead at their home.
