A Professional Life

Perry traveled to Sacramento at the age of 16 to form Ice with his friends. Unfortunately, the band disbanded due to a lack of management. In 1975, he relocated to Thousand Oaks, California, and formed Pieces, a progressive rock band. The band separated after a year and a half because they were unable to acquire a recording contract. Perry was able to answer the phone from Walter “Herbie” Herbert, the manager of the San Francisco band Journey, after his mother’s urgent call.

Perry gave the band’s music a new, more pop-influenced style sense. Perry was able to capture the hearts of his audiences with his new approach and magnificent tenor voice, despite some disappointed fans here and there. Perry sang lead vocals on nine Journey albums and released his debut solo album, “Street Talk,” in 1984, which went on to sell over two million copies. Perry’s mother became ill during the Raised on Radio tour with Journey, so he had to travel to San Joaquin to see her during the recording sessions. This had a significant impact on the band, and they split in 1987. Perry took a sabbatical from music for a few years in order to clear his thoughts. He reformed the band in 1996 and recorded a new album, Trial by Fire. The album was a great hit, and before the end of the year, it was on its way to becoming platinum. Unfortunately, Perry had a hip injury while hiking in Hawaii and was unable to continue on tour. After that, he departed the band after being given an ultimatum to receive a hip replacement surgery.
