He received his Bachelor of Arts in English and Education and his Master of Theater Arts from the Long Island University C. W. Post Campus.

Comedian

He then embarked on a career as a stand-up comedian. Drew Carey, Dennis Miller, and Rosie O’Donnel, his roommate, staged shows for him. Eddie Murphy, Rodney Dangerfield, Jerry Seinfeld, and Ellen DeGeneres joined him on stage.

Rizzo had been performing stand-up comedy for more than 18 years. He performed in a variety of comedy venues throughout his career as a stand-up comedian, including the Pittsburgh Comedy Club in Dormont and the Improv. He also appeared in a number of TV comedy shows, including “An Evening at the Improv,” “The Comedy Channel,” “Showtime Special,” and “Fox TV’s Comic Strip Live.” The Pittsburgh Press defined Rizzo’s comedic approach as “whip-cracking sarcasm padded with warm and humorous anecdotes” on June 2, 1983.

Speaking on a Positive Note

Rizzo has retired from stand-up comedy in order to pursue a new career as a motivational speaker. He went on to become a professional motivational speaker in 1994. Rizzo attended a National Speakers Association training. Rizzo met Nancy Lauterbach, the founder of Five Star Speakers and Trainers, who assisted him with his presentation structure.

Rizzo was asked to speak at the National Speakers Association’s national convention on How to Add Humor to Your Presentation. He also finished the last out of 23 speakers in the first showcase. He worked so hard to come out as a “serious motivating speaker.” But he soon recognized that his sense of humor is essential to his genuineness. Rizzo declares;

“I was light years ahead of many professional speakers because I had command of an audience,”.

Then, in his second performance, Rizzo added a dash of humour. Buyers recruited him right away after his outstanding performance in the showcase. After that, he obtained a contract with Five Star, and his speaking career took off. Rizzo attributes his success to Lauterbach, who assisted him in launching his new profession as a motivational speaker.

Rizzo also produced a PBS special in which he serves as the executive producer. “Steve Rizzo is the author of Becoming a Humor Being and also the creator and executive producer of PBS program,” Mehmet Oz says in an article released by Oprah Radio (via Oprah.com) on December 8, 2006. Steve has become a professional humorist speaker after performing stand-up comedy for several years.”

Rizzo went on to work as a consultant for MSNBC and the Oprah Winfrey Network. On the McGraw-Hill website, Rizzo’s book “Get Your SHIFT Together: How to Think, Laugh, and Enjoy Your Way to Success in Business and Life” was also released.
