Growing up, Steve Wright wanted to be in the entertainment business. He occasionally used the school’s speaker system to broadcast a fledgling radio program from the school’s supply closet. Early in the 1970s, he began working for the BBC as a returns clerk in the Gramophone Library at Egton House, directly across from Broadcasting House. In 1976, he moved away to begin a career in broadcasting at Thames Valley Radio 210 in Reading, Berkshire. His big break came in 1979 when he had his own weekly show on Radio Luxembourg on a Saturday night. Later, he also hosted a Saturday morning show. He joined BBC Radio 1 in 1980. Later that year, he switched to Saturday mornings after initially taking over a Saturday evening position.

In 1981, he switched to daytime radio and joined Steve Wright in the Afternoon. In 1984, he took over the Sunday morning program Steve Wright on Sunday. 1986 saw the conclusion of his Sunday morning program. Steve Wright in the Afternoon’s first run on BBC Radio 1 lasted from 1981 to 1993. Gavin McCoy, Peter Dickson, Richard Easter, and Phil Cornwell’s ensemble of telephone characters, which appeared on the show on Radio 1, helped make it famous. In 1994, Wright and his Posse made the switch to The Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Differences with the administration of BBC Radio led to his resignation from the Breakfast Show in 1995. In 1995, he was then hired by the brand-new Talk Radio station. He ran a Saturday morning program.

Up to October 2003, the show was on. On July 1, 2022, he made the announcement that he would be quitting his program, Steve Wright in the Afternoon. Beginning in October, Scott Mills would take over the program. He will still broadcast his other programs, such as Sunday Love Songs, on Radio 2, though.
