Susan Blumenthal is an American physician best known for her work as the director of the US government’s Office on Women’s Health. She is also well-known for being the wife of Ed Markey, a popular Democratic Party politician in the United States.

Bill Clinton appointed her as director of the Office on Women’s Health, where she worked for four years. She grew in popularity and became a favorite of many women across the United States.

Education

Blumenthal is of Jewish descent. Blumenthal’s mother died of cancer when she was a child, which influenced her decision to become a doctor. Blumenthal earned a bachelor’s degree from Reed College and a master’s degree in public administration (MPA) from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She finished her residency at Stanford University School of Medicine and her post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health. Blumenthal completed clinical clerkships at Stanford University School of Medicine after graduating from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine.

Career

Blumenthal worked as a national leader and senior government health official, researcher, and policymaker in the administrations of four U.S. presidents for more than two decades.
She was the United States’ Assistant Surgeon General, as well as a rear admiral and senior science/e-health advisor in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).  Blumenthal was the first deputy assistant secretary for women’s health and director of the Office on Women’s Health from 1993 to 1997.  In this role, she was in charge of a $4 billion budget for women’s health research, services, and education programs across HHS agencies such as the NIH, CDC, and FDA, as well as collaborating with other government agencies and private sector organizations to improve women’s health. Blumenthal established new initiatives to advance women’s health and the study of gender differences, such as the National Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health Program at major academic health centers across the country, the National Women’s Health Information Center, a resource hub accessible via the internet and a toll-free phone number, and appointed regional women’s health coordinators. She worked as a White House health advisor during this time. During her tenure, funding and attention were significantly increased for women’s health, and women’s health care became a national priority.

Later in life

Blumenthal is currently the HuffPost public health editor, the senior policy and medical advisor at AmfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, and a clinical professor at Tufts Medical Center and the Georgetown University School of Medicine.
She is also a senior fellow in health policy at New America, where she directs the SNAP to Health initiative, which promotes nutrition and obesity prevention in Federal Food Assistance Programs and investigates ways to use information technology to improve health. Blumenthal also serves on the boards of directors of several philanthropic and educational organizations, and he is a member of the MIT Media Lab’s advisory council.
