Tenure:

Collins and Senator Olympia Snowe played a major role in the Senate’s impeachment trial of Bill Clinton in the 1990s, when they sponsored a resolution that would have allowed the Senate to vote independently on the allegations and remedies. She was also a strong advocate of legislation reorganizing the US intelligence community in 2004 by creating a new position called Director of National Intelligence.

She was also one of 14 senators who reached an agreement with the Democrats in May 2005 on the use of the judicial filibuster. During the 2009 swine flu epidemic, she was penalized by the government for refusing to pay for flu relief. Senators Susan Collins and Joe Lieberman issued a subpoena for records and interviews connected to the American government’s investigation of investigators’ interactions with Nidal Hasan prior to the Fort Hood incident in April 2010.
