Former Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar Solanki is better known by his stage name Sushil Kumar. He rose to stardom after taking home four gold medals from the 2003 to 2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships. In 2000, he earned another gold at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship. Then, he earned a gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in addition to a bronze medal in the Asian Wrestling Championships. During the 2003 World Championships, Kumar finished fourth. The Indian media, however, paid little attention to this because he performed poorly at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, finishing 14th in the 60 kg weight class.

At the 2010 Global Wrestling Championships, Kumar became the first Indian to win a world wrestling championship after defeating Leonid Spiridonov 3:1 in the bronze medal match. He also defeated local favorite Alan Gogaev of Russia 3-1 in the 66 kg division final.

Additionally, on October 10, 2010, he took home a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games of 2010. They were held in Delhi. In the 66 kg freestyle wrestling finals, he defeated Heinrich Barnes 7-0. He was awarded a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics after finishing second to Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu in the championship match. He had upset Akzhurek Tanatarov of Kazakhstan to get to the final amid some controversy. Also, He carried the Indian Olympic flag during the opening ceremony, becoming the first Indian since India’s independence to take home two individual Olympic medals.

He then won the 74 kg gold medal match against Qamar Abbas in 107 seconds by fall at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. On April 12, 2018, Sushil defeated South Africa’s Johannes Botha to win the gold medal in the 74 kg division, completing the feat of winning three gold medals in three straight Commonwealth Games.
