Early Life and Family
On October 29, 1996, Swapna Barman was born into an impoverished Indian family. Swapna was born in the state of West Bengal in India. Swapna’s father became ill after suffering a stroke in 2013, leaving her to bear the financial load. Despite her injuries, she was forced to compete in National Level Events, sports, or contests in order to help support her family financially. Her struggles persisted until 2017, when she was awarded scholarships from the ‘GoSports’ Foundation and a stipend from the ONGC as part of the ‘Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Program.’ The athlete also won the Heptathlon in the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, which were held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Her parents are Panchanan Barman, a Rickshaw Driver, and Basana, a Tea Estate Worker, and she was raised in a Hindu family. Swapna’s family has always been impoverished, so she relies on her wages to help them get by. Her mother sighs, unable to supply the critical sustenance that an athlete’s body demands. Swapna’s family staged a spectacular celebration to celebrate her historic Asian Games victory. - She enrolled at Charuchandra College in Kolkata after finishing high school. When she first came to him for high jump training, her instructor, Subhash Sarkar, rejected her.
